Cognitive Behaviour Therapy
WHAT IS CBT?
Cognitive Behaviour Therapy is the most widely used talking therapy in the UK, due to the strong evidence base proving it can help with a range of common mental health problems. More recent evidence has also shown CBT as an effective treatment for long term physical health conditions.
CBT looks at how your thoughts directly affect how you feel and how you act. As well as, how you think about yourself, other people and the world around you. Overall, shaping your life and relationships.
As thoughts, emotions, physical feelings and behaviours are all connected, if we work on changing one of these areas there will be a knock on effect in the others. CBT focuses on changing unhelpful thoughts and unhelpful behaviours, to help you feel better emotionally and physically.
CBT is preferable when individuals are ready to work on feeling better in the here and now, rather than spending too much time focused on the past. However, there may be times we can use information about the past to help you move forwards.
WHAT IS a CBT session like?
Treatment begins with an assessment phase, to build an understanding of how the problem developed and what is keeping it going. This ensures therapy techniques can be tailored to your symptoms. Sessions will then focus on learning strategies and practising them effectively.
Although a lot of learning occurs during a therapy session, progress also depends on how much you practice strategies in your daily life.
Skills can then be used as a preventative tool, to help you stay well in the future.

how long does it take?
CBT is intended to be a short-term therapy, as the aim is to provide you with skills to manage independently, rather than reliance on long-term appointments. A treatment course usually lasts between 5 and 20 sessions. For more severe problems, a longer therapy course may be necessary. Sessions are typically 50 minutes, scheduled each week or fortnight.
